Nationals Waikato MP Tim van de Molen delivered his maiden speech last week:

The mighty Waikato: beautiful scenery; well managed & successful farms; thriving and vibrant provincial towns; diverse but united communities; and continual opportunity.

As the new Member of Parliament for the Waikato, I want to start by saying that it is an absolute privilege to have been elected to this role, and in such a magnificent part of the country.

A role that holds great opportunity & great responsibility. As a new MP, listening is a key part of this. My grandfather once said, you have two ears & one mouth, use them in that proportion. Congratulations to my fellow new MPs, Im excited about the path ahead, as Im sure you are.

2017 is the 75th anniversary of the release of Casablanca, one of the most beloved films of all time. It has many scenes where phrases have passed into our normal speech.

It makes for an interesting read.

Generational Change ? Yeah Right! "IndyWatch Feed Politics.nz"

Much has been made in the media, both domestic and international, about how Ms Ardern represents generational change. Yet much of this is media spin and not supported by facts. In fact the lack of comment by NZ media is concerning, but not surprising.

For example her Chief of Staff was Helen Clarks COS and Number One enforcer, shades of Malcolm Tucker?

For the Tax Working Group the leader is to be Michael Cullen. Some of her MPs have been there for a longtime and with little to show for it, e.g. Nanaiia Mahuta.

Therefore this classic Who number, in their Woodstock performance in 1969, some years before Ms Arderns birth seemed very apt

Trump and Ardern a common approach (1) -First up tax "IndyWatch Feed Politics.nz"

What has surprised Adam  recently is just how close Trump and Ardern are in their policy views. This is the first post in a series.

There are a number of areas where Trump and Ardern seem to have similar views. However, we have this glaring one.

Trump and Ardern both claim to be promoting a fairer tax system.

Yet what do we see, measures to the contrary.

Trumps widely ridiculed tax pledges will increase pressures on the poor whilst delivering to business and the wealthy.

Arderns pledges include increased benefits to the student population, the great majority of which come from higher income families and will probably go on to well paid careers. This will be paid for by imposing new taxes on the poorest sections of NZ society. This is fair?

The main goal here is to create a better, balanced and fairer tax system for New Zealand, Robertson said. Our belief at the moment is that we do not have that.

ON REDUCING POVERTY "IndyWatch Feed Politics.nz"

Peter Cresswell has posted a thoughtful piece on his 'Not PC' blog titled 'What does Jacinda know that Lyndon Johnson didn't?'.   The underlying message is that welfarism is not the answer to poverty.

The article is reproduced below (with the kind permission of Peter).
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This year commemorates the 50th anniversary on US president Lyndon Johnson's famous War on Poverty.

The stated goal of the War on Poverty, as enunciated by Lyndon Johnson on January 8, 1964, was, not only to relieve the symptom of poverty, but to cure it and, above all, to prevent it. Measured against this objective, the War on Poverty has not just been a failure, it has been a catastrophe. It was supposed to help Americas poor become self-sufficient, and it has made them dependent and dysfunctional.
But they spent US$21.5 trillion fighting poverty over the past 50 years. All that moolah must have made some difference, you say?  Well, no, not really:
Shortly after the War on Poverty got rolling (1967), about 27% of Americans lived in poverty. In 2012, the last year for which data is available, the number was about 29%.
But hasn't it just become harder to keep out of poverty over that time, you ask? Well, no, just the opposite:
Between 1967 and 2012, U.S. real GDP (RGDP) per capita (in 4Q2013 dollars) increased by 127.3%, from $23,706 to $52,809. In other words, to stay out of poverty in 1967, the two adults in a typical family of four had to capture 26.9% of their familys proportionate share of RGDP (i.e., average RGDP per capita, times four). To accomplish the same thing in 2012, they only had to pull in 12.1% of their familys share of RGDP. And yet, fewer people were able to manage this in 2012 than in 1967.
Sooooo, what's going on here then? The answer: incentives. Incentives matter.
What turned the War on Poverty into a social and human catastrophe was that the enhanced welfare state created a perverse system of incentives, and people adapted to their new environment...
The adaptation of the working-age poor to the War......

Raising Hitler's Ghost. "IndyWatch Feed Politics.nz"

Another Wild Ride Through Germany? As Germany struggles to construct a government, Eastern European nationalism, the nationalism of Russia, Poland, Hungary and the Ukraine, is having its revenge. The unabashedly white supremacist and Islamophobic populism that has taken hold in the lands to Germanys east, is summoning from its grave the ghost of Hitlers psychopathic god. (Painting: "The Wild Ride", 1889, by Franz Von Stuck.)

GERMANYS TROUBLES always blow in from the East. Unsurprising really, since, geographically speaking, theres not a lot to stop them. Those fastnesses of steppe, plain and forest, home to all manner of divine scourges, have haunted the Germanic imagination for centuries. Indeed, guarding the borders against the ravages of barbarian Lithuanians, Poles and Russians from the east has proved to be one of the most consistent themes of Germanic history. Teutonic Knights and Prussian grenadiers; the warriors of Empire and Reich: all have braved the dragons of the East, until, as Germanys poet-philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, rightly predicted they turned into dragons themselves.

What began as a mission to protect the volk, eventually morphed into a mandate for conquest. For a thousand years, Germans have inflicted upon their neighbours the very horrors they feared their neighbours were conspiring to inflict upon them. Germanic cultures unrelenting Drang nach Osten (drive towards the east) stirred up a witches brew of ethnic and cultural resentments which continue to trouble the dreams of Europe. The nations born out of the bleeding corpses of the Hohenzollern and Hapsburg empires were never able to transcend the circumstances of their post-World War I creation. Eastern European nationalism remains as extreme in its expression as the German chauvinism which gave it birth.

And now, as Germany struggles to construct a government, all that Eastern European nationalism, the nationalism of Russia, Poland, Hung...

The latest Roy Morgan poll out today and taken over the two week period concluding on 12 November confirms that Labour and Greens are, as expected, enjoying a honeymoon period.

Labour is up 2.6% over its election result to 39.5% and is now only 1% behind National while the Greens are 3.7% up to 10%.

But there will be a certain knashing of teeth in Winston First.   They are now down 2.2% to 5% which is margin of error stuff over them being booted out of Parliament.   Clearly they have upset some of their voting demographic.

Interesting that TOP is still hanging in there at 2% while the Maori Party has increased their support slightly to 1.5%.

One might confidently expect the Labour/Green honeymoon to last through to until the winter sets in although 'their' policy flip flops will be eating into their reservoir of goodwill.

Communist In All But Name! Is Jacinda About to Oversee the Second Peaceful Transition to Kiwi Socialism? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.nz"

That's One Scary Lady! For all its bluster and bullshit, Neoliberalism turns out to be a remarkably fragile ideology. So much so, that the election of Jacinda Ardern the Kiwi politician who dared describe Capitalism as a blatant failure was enough to give Forbes magazine's readers the heebee-jeebees.

TO HEAR FORBESMAGAZINE TELL IT, socialism was achieved in New Zealand during 1960s and 70s, without bloodshed. In an opinion piece published by Forbes on Monday (20/11/17) former Lehman Brothers staffer, Jared Dillian, put it like this:

Not long ago, [New Zealand] was one of the most unfree economies that was not actually Communist in name. Most industry was nationalized, from telecommunications and transportation, to banks and hotels.

This description is intended to and probably will shock the One Percenters who subscribe to Forbes. I, however, would happily wear Mr Dillians description of pre-1984 New Zealand as a badge of honour.

Most right-wingers insist that socialism can only be imposed on a country by force. They point to Stalins Soviet Union, Maos China, Castros Cuba and, more recently, to Chavezs and Maduros Venezuela, as proof that the slightest deviation from the shining path of Neoliberalism can only end in tears and firing-squads. And yet, according to Dillian, New Zealand cracked it! Accomplishing its transition from Capitalism to Socialism through free and fair elections, and without the need for a single gulag, or a single shot being fired.

Naturally, Dillian does his best to paint for his readers the most lurid picture possible of life under New Zealands democratic-socialist regime. One can only imagine his millionaire readers shuddering with fear upon learning that:

There were strict capital controls and prohibitions on owning foreign assets. And of course, punitiv...
